Georgina Beyer on Debate - Prime Minister's Statement
20 February 2001

GEORGINA BEYER (NZ Labour--Wairarapa): I take the opportunity to speak in this debate on the Prime Minister's statement. Of course I do not support the motion moved by the Leader of the Opposition, which essentially states that the Opposition has no confidence in the Government.

There is every reason in this nation today to have great confidence in this Government. It is certainly reflected in the polls at the moment. I have been to a couple of events in recent days, one being the Hero Parade, where people from a wide diversity of the community came and talked to me, amongst other people. They expressed their happiness that Helen Clark had again returned to the Hero Parade, but this time as Prime Minister.

It was absolutely obvious that the Leader of the Opposition, who attended Hero Parades when she was Prime Minister, now as Leader of the Opposition does not want to have the "pink" vote. She does not want people to see that she has lost confidence in sectors of our community.
