GEORGINA BEYER (Labour-Wairarapa): It is a pleasure to speak on the Telecommunications (Interception Capability) Bill. It is worth reiterating some of the key objectives of this bill. We have to maintain law enforcement and national security capabilities in an environment of rapid changes in technology. Thus we need to require telecommunications companies to provide interception capability for e-communications. We are doing this in a highly targeted way, eroding neither privacy nor basic individual rights, and in a way that is in tune with the Government’s aim of an innovative society. I commend this bill going through to the select committee.
