Police recruitment well on track
80 new police recruits entered training at the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua this week, bringing the total number of recruits this year to 680. This is a major step towards the Government's drive to recruit 1000 more sworn police and 250 non-sworn over the next three years, part of its ongoing commitment to making all our communities safer for New Zealand families.
Councils win grants for youth projects
A range of innovative youth projects by local councils that support young people to get into work, further education or training, will receive government grants totaling more than $680,000. The Ministry of Youth Development's annual Youth Development Partnership Fund will support initiatives by 11 territorial authorities that will involve, challenge and encourage young people. The successful councils will receive grants ranging from $34,000 to $150,000, from total funding of $681,700.
Pay or Stay campaign takes off
The Collections of Fines at Airports campaign was launched this week, meaning those who evade paying their fines or default on reparation payments may find the departure gate closed. As a result of legislation passed earlier this year people travelling internationally with a warrant for arrest and who owe reparation of any amount or have more than $5000 in fines to pay can now be stopped. People will still be able to travel if they pay up on the spot and everyone will be given that opportunity. Working Holiday Scheme with Estonia signed
The government this week signed an agreement establishing a Working Holiday Scheme between New Zealand and Estonia, enabling young people from both New Zealand and Estonia to experience each other's countries and cultures, and to build important links between the two nations. The scheme is the first of what is hoped will be several working holiday schemes covering the northern EU nations of Poland and the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
