Bulk Funding Announcement
29 March 2000

Georgina Beyer MP said she was delighted that 52 schools in her electorate would be benefiting from a one-off payment to centrally-resourced schools.

"This payment will be in schools' accounts next week and I know schools will be able to make good use of the extra money to help enhance the learning of their students," Georgina Beyer said.

"Centrally resourced schools in the Wairarapa Electorate will be better off with each school receiving between $800.00 and $220,000. This is possible because fewer schools entered bulk funding than National anticipated.

"The Minister of Education, Trevor Mallard, has told us that under the National Government, this $15.1 million would have gone back to Treasury - even though it was budgeted for schools.

"I think schools would have seen that as a travesty. I am often impressed when I visit schools at the range of activities and programmes that schools in the Wairarapa Electorate offer their children. Teachers, principals, and parents work really hard to help each child fulfil their potential.

"The Government believes that it was unfair that extra funding only be available to schools that were prepared to switch to bulk funding. From next year, schools will be funded on the same formula that will take into account their roll size and their socio-economic status. For most schools, it will mean extra funding.

"In the meantime, I look forward to hearing about how Wairarapa schools will make use of this one-off payment," Georgina Beyer said.
