In a joint announcement made today, Georgina Beyer MP and Adam Floyd, Chair of the Wairarapa Labour Electorate Committee (LEC) confirmed that Ms Beyer would be seeking re-selection as a Labour candidate for Wairarapa in the 2002 general election.
Mr Floyd stated he was delighted to have Georgina reaffirm her commitment to the Wairarapa Electorate. He said he would do all that he could to ensure that the positive leadership provided by Prime Minister Helen Clark and her team would continue with Georgina at the helm in the Wairarapa.
"The hard work and commitment to the local Labour Party is greatly appreciated", says Ms Beyer. "It was a difficult decision to make back in April not to seek re-selection. However I was unprepared for the wave of disappointment expressed to me by people in the electorate, by Māori communities and minority groups throughout the country, by Labour Party officials and colleagues in the House, including the Prime Minister.
"Your opinions do matter. It has had the effect of re-affirming my commitment and enthusiasm for the job. I know my indecision caused some people to question my dedication. Despite my local government experience, the learning curve for a first term backbench MP cannot be under-estimated.
"I cannot state too strongly my real commitment to serve the people of the Wairarapa electorate and appreciate the extent of the practical encouragement out there for me to continue to represent the electorate", says Ms Beyer. "As a new MP I made a pledge that I would work to maintain caring and compassion in New Zealand political life. This will continue to be a central theme of my job as a constituency MP."
