Families in the Masterton area will soon be able to turn to the wisdom and experience of older New Zealanders to help with the challenges of raising a family, Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer said today.
The Government has announced funding for SuperGrans Wairarapa to provide a SAGES programme in Masterton.
SAGES involves older people providing one-on-one life and home skills to young families in need, including budgeting, nutritious cooking and positive parenting.
"SAGES recognises that many young families do not have access to supportive older mentors," Ms Beyer said.
"Older people are a valuable source of wisdom and the government is keen to have young families benefit from their knowledge."
SuperGrans Wairarapa is one of seven new organisations nationwide to receive SAGES funding. Eight other organisations received funding in the last financial year.
The Government announced in the 2004 Budget, that it is investing $3.2 million over four years to cover the training and transport costs of older volunteers, administration support and capacity building. It's expected that 2000 families will take part on the SAGES programme by 2008.
Georgina Beyer has contributed a nutritious and budget-wise recipe to add the local SAGES' arsenal of easy meals that young families can prepare and here it is.
