Wairarapa schools benefit from education works programme
26 July 2001

Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer says thirty-three local schools will benefit directly from the Government's $393 million property works programme for schools confirmed today by the Minister of Education for 2001/2002.

Ms Beyer says that the programme, confirming money announced in the Budget, emphasises the Government's continuing determination to deliver a better learning environment for both teachers and students in the 21st century. Schools in the Wairarapa are no exception.

The programme's focus is on both creating capacity to support roll growth and improving existing school accommodation through general modernisation.

One of the highlights is the 5-Year programme. This scheme was introduced last year as a means of giving schools long-term certainty and flexibility for property resourcing. All schools will have the option of having a five-year agreement with the Government by 2004/05. So far Dannevirke High School, Elsthorpe School, Harley Street School, Hillcrest School (Dannevirke), Hiona Intermediate, Makoura College, Mangamaire School, Martinborough School, Masterton East School, Masterton Intermediate, Matamau School, Ormondville School, Pahiatua School, Pirinoa School, Ruahine School, Wairarapa College, Weber School and Woodville School have had the option to join the five year property plan. Now Awariki School, Eketahuna School, Fernridge School, Greytown School, Mangaorapa School, Omakere School and Wallingford School have been invited to join.

Masterton West School, Porangahau School and Rua Roa School will receive funding for general modernisation.

The Budgets for these will be known once the 1 July rolls have been collated.

Schools have also benefited from the financial assistance scheme, which is when the Government and the school share the cost of a project. Dalefield School $9,030 for an all Weather Shelter, Dannevirke South School $6,011 for Computer Cabling, Miki Miki School $11,000 to Modernise Block 'A', Norsewood School $3,594 for Computer Cabling and Papatawa School $2,226 for Computer Cabling.

Ms Beyer says it is pleasing to see, as she goes around the electorate, the positive improvement the Government's investment in school property is making to education delivery.
