Fresh water thoughts in the pipeline
26 January 2005

The Government is tapping into what Wairarapa people think on how to best manage the region's fresh water supplies.

People from around Wairarapa will have the chance to meet officials and experts from the Ministry for the Environment and Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and to make submissions on the Government's Water Programme of Action.

Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer says the two Wairarapa meetings are part of a nationwide consultation programme occurring in February, with submissions closing on 18 March.

"Clean and plentiful water is part of our heritage and we all want it to stay that way. Our rivers and lakes are priceless - for drinking water, for the environment, irrigation, energy, for cultural values, recreation and tourism.

"I think it is important that as many people as possible in Wairarapa contribute their views on how we should fairly use, protect and preserve water," said Ms Beyer.

Wairarapa will host two meetings: a hui starting at 10am on February 3 at Papawai Marae, Greytown; and a public meeting starting at 7:00 pm on February 7 at the Masterton District Council, Masterton.

A copy of the discussion document, Freshwater for a Sustainable Future: Issues and Options is available for download from two government websites: www.maf.govt.nz and www.mfe.govt.nz.
