The good times roll in Wairarapa
24 November 2003

The economic buoyancy producing record low unemployment across New Zealand is also delivering for Wairarapa businesses.

Statistics New Zealand figures just out show the number of Wairarapa businesses grew by 4 percent in the year to February; the national average was 4.5 percent.

"That means Wairarapa enjoyed a net increase of 153 businesses, which are employing more people and creating opportunity for all across the community," said Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer.

Since February 2000, shortly after the Labour-led government took office, the number of businesses in the area covered by Carterton, Masterton, South Wairarapa, and Tararua councils has increased from 3996 to 4460 this year, a 12 percent increase.

The figures from Statistics NZ also record that 25739 (89%) of local businesses employ fewer than ten people.

Georgina Beyer said the Labour/Progressive government acknowledged the challenges that face small businesses and the crucial role they play in the economy.

The government today announced it will host a small business forum in Masterton on Thursday 29 April as part of its commitment to reducing compliance costs and encouraging further business growth.

"This growth is essential for everyone's future. It's driving down unemployment and putting more people into jobs in Wairarapa," said Georgina Beyer.

"While the 4.8 percent unemployment rate recorded for the Wellington region still leaves us with some challenges, most of the developed world can't match it.

"A key government strategy to help business and the unemployed is to equip people with the skills for work. There are now around 8400 people in industry training in Wellington."

Georgina Beyer said economic commentators are now acknowledging that the Labour-led government's leadership and partnership with regions is helping to create a stronger and more confident nation.
