Wairarapa communities are safer because of the Labour-led government's policies, and the evidence is in the official crime figures, says Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer.
The official crime figures for the year ending 30th June indicate a very small increase in total crime for the Wairarapa Police Area but significant reductions in dishonesty offences, including burglary and car theft.
"Recorded crime for the wider Wellington District has dropped 12.7 percent in 2003/04," said Ms Beyer.
"The stats also show the significant nationwide reduction in crime is being reflected in our community, and it's due to the Labour-led Government's six year investment in safer communities."
Dishonesty offences in Wairarapa fell by 19.3 percent. Burglaries were down 28 percent and car theft was reduced by 36 percent.
Ms Beyer says the satisfying reduction in crime is not just the result of the Government's billion-dollar investment in Police, but also a range of policies that have put New Zealanders into jobs, raised their quality of life and given them a stake in their community.
"The Government has poured more resources into Police than any Government before: more staff, more money, more cars, more police stations and more equipment.
"Police numbers will rise to over 10,000 over the next year and Labour is pledging a further 250 community constables over the next term.
"Our road safety strategy has resulted in the lowest road tolls in 40 years, with the lowest-ever ratio of road deaths per population - proof that it's about saving life and limb, not for revenue-gathering. In fact, road policing costs twice as much to implement as is received in tickets.
"Today's crime figures prove that Labour is providing safer homes, safer communities and safer roads."
