Wairarapa MP Georgina MP today congratulated the 20 schools in the Wairarapa electorate that have been selected to take part in the successful Count Me In Too numeracy project.
"This is a great new programme which offers a lot for both children and teachers," Ms Beyer said.
The project was trialed last year in 83 schools around the country and has received exceptionally positive reviews in the evaluation report released today by the Minister of Education, Hon Trevor Mallard.
As a result of the success of the pilot project, Count Me In Too is to be expanded to 414 schools as part of the Early Numeracy Project. The expansion of the programme takes Government expenditure in the area of numeracy to $7.2 million this year.
"Count Me in Too represents a significant development in teaching mathematics to younger children," Ms Beyer said.
"The course of the pilot programme saw real improvements both among children in Years One to Three and in improving teacher capability and professional development.
"The Government has a strong focus on basic numeracy as a building block for later educational success. It is exciting that local schools are involved in this programme."
