Targeted tax relief for Northern Wairarapa families has received the endorsement that counts: more local families taking up their entitlements.
Labour MP Georgina Beyer says the latest uptake figures show some 10,500 families registered with Inland Revenue's Palmerston North district office* were getting Working for Families tax relief in the month of June 2006 - up by 4500 from 6000 in June 2005.
"In just 12 months, we've seen a 75 percent increase across this area in the number of families getting targeted tax relief," said Ms Beyer.
"This is great news and shows the effectiveness of the Labour-led Government's public awareness campaign about Working for Families.
"We're committed to supporting New Zealand families to build the best future for our children, and Working for Families is the most effective way to do that."
In June this year, the Government paid out $140 million in Working for Families targeted tax relief to families all over New Zealand. It's estimated that about 360,000 Kiwi families will be better off as a result of Working for Families this financial year.
Ms Beyer said the Government would continue working to ensure families knew about their possible entitlements through Working for Families.
"Some may still be unaware that they qualify for assistance and the Government is still trying to get the message through. We don't want anyone to miss out.
"It's easy to check if you're eligible, and it's never too late to apply. The online calculator only takes a couple of minutes or you can ring the 0800 number."
