Nominations close in just five days for this year's District Health Board elections and Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer is urging rural candidates to put their names forward.
"Nominations for the October 9 elections close in just a few days - at noon on Friday - and I know there are many local rural people who're passionate about health, so I'd love to see them put their names forward," said Ms Beyer.
"The elections for membership of Wairarapa DHB present an opportunity for rural communities in Wairarapa to have a representative voice on a key regional decision-making body."
Ms Beyer says that while a lot of interest has been shown, the Ministry of Health has so far received only a very few nominations for rural candidates.
The MP says a good candidate with an affinity for their community has a reasonable chance of election if voters get behind them - especially with the new preferential voting system - Single Transferable Vote (STV) - replacing First Past the Post (FPP).
"With STV, voters have a direct and meaningful influence on choosing of all seven elected board members," said Ms Beyer.
"If you're the sort of person who can bring ideas and skills to the job, and if you really want to make a difference to the health of your community, being on the DHB would be a hugely rewarding job."
Remuneration for the part-time commitment of being an elected member of a DHB ranges from $15,000 to $24,000 per annum.
