Georgina Beyer MP announced today that her Human Rights (Gender Identity) Amendment Bill preventing discrimination against transgendered people was to be postponed while further information is gathered for MPs.
Many MPs have expressed support in principle for the Bill but it is clear that they also have a lot of questions. Gender Identity is not well understood and the provision of further information will help.
"I will talk further to Hon Marian Hobbs, the relevant Minister, the Human Rights Commission and transgender and intersex communities who may also be able to assist," said Ms Beyer.
The heart of this Bill is about protecting a vulnerable sector of our society from being discriminated against because of their Gender Identity. It is not clear under current law and with the success of the Bill passing it would be beyond doubt.
