Georgina Beyer MP Wairarapa today supported the government's decision to hold a Ministerial inquiry into Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ).
Ms Beyer said the culture of extravagance in the public sector which flourished under the previous government had to go. "Excessive spending under National was an outrage and must be stopped. I am shocked that $235,000 was spent on a single WINZ conference, and that planes were chartered for staff. WINZ spent one million dollars on re-branding last year and more than a million on advertising.
"WINZ's reputation for wastage and extravagance are unacceptable to the people of Wairarapa, and to me personally. I see many local people in my electorate work who survive on low incomes and rely on WINZ services. It is appalling that public money for essential income support has been misused."
Georgina Beyer said she is determined that the people of Wairarapa receive a professional and efficient service for their taxes. There is certainly a perception that they are not getting this from WINZ.
"The new government is driving a culture change in the public sector. It is guided by principles of moderation, thrift, and service to the public. I am pleased to be part of a government of action," Georgina Beyer said.
