Special education students in Wairarapa are getting their share of a funding boost of $30.7 million over the next four years in Budget 2005.
Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer says the increase comes hot on the heels of a one-third increases for special education since 1999, with total nationwide funding rising from $290 million in 1999 to $388 million in 2005.
Between 1999 and 2004, the Wairarapa electorate's share of special education operational funding rose by 59 percent to $1,154,557. Salaries funding increased by 66 percent to an estimated $1,991,204, providing 9.1 more full time equivalent teachers.
Ms Beyer said the Government is committed to addressing concerns raised by schools and parents of students with special needs.
"Parents of special needs students tell me they want exactly the same as all parents want for their children," said Ms Beyer.
"More money always helps, but so does making special needs children welcome at school and ensuring they can enjoy the fullest possible participation in education."
The Government is today publishing reports on special education services in the region, part of future planning for an education sector that it says will value children and young people living with a disability.
