MP says get a kick out of putting your hand up
13 March 2006

March 12 - 18 is Volunteer Awareness Week and Labour Government List MP Georgina Beyer is encouraging Kiwis to put up their hand to help.

Ms Beyer says it's worth celebrating and acknowledging the excellent work of volunteers.

"Our communities depend on the efforts of volunteers. They're crucial to the Kiwi way of life, they contribute to our sense of wellbeing and they're part of our national identity," said Ms Beyer.

More than a million Kiwis across the country are actively involved in regular volunteer work in their communities, both individually and in organisations. They work on specific issues or with particular population groups such as young people, older folk or those living with disabilities.

"I frequently meet people helping with sports, recreation, arts, culture and heritage, to emergency and social services, health, education, conservation and the environment," said Ms Beyer.

"There's lots of variety and opportunities - everyone gets a kick out of putting their hand up!"

Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Luamanuvao Winnie said the Government was serious about supporting the voluntary sector and had adopted a formal policy on volunteering in 2002.

"The Government wants lots more New Zealanders to get involved in volunteering, and we want to see the many contributions that people make actively supported and valued," Luamanuvao Winnie Laban said.

"Volunteering is a gift that our society relies on, but one we all can give. If you're ready to put your hand up, contact your local Volunteer Centre."

Volunteer centres can be reached through freephone 0800 865 268 or the website www.volunteernow.org.nz.
