Unemployment rates for Wairarapa continue to drop, reinforcing a new record low that ranks New Zealand best in the developed world.
The national unemployment rate fell to a 19-year low of 3.4 percent, down two points from the June quarter.
Labour List MP Georgina Beyer says it's worth celebrating the 265,700 people in the Wellington region now in work.
The latest Household Labour Force Survey, released yesterday, puts the region's September quarter unemployment rate at 3.9 percent, down from 4.7 percent this time last year.
Ms Beyer said the number of people who have moved from benefits into work is one of the greatest success story of the Labour-led Government.
Since the Government took office near the end of 1999 the Wellington region has seen 36,250 more people in work and the unemployment rate has dropped by 37 percent.
"What's so great about these statistics is that they represent real people and real success stories. This is the proof of a strong economy helping people to be great New Zealanders.
"I have no doubt that by getting more people into work we are reducing the pressures on Wairarapa people and their families and whole communities are benefiting."
Ms Beyer said the Government will continue helping people off benefits and into work, and support skills training.
"New Zealand now has the lowest rate of unemployment in the Western World. We know business are still crying out for workers, especially skilled ones, so as a government we will continue to support skills training like the modern apprenticeships scheme," said Ms Beyer.
