Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer has acknowledged the work of the Tribunal, as it celebrates 25 years today.
"The tribunal has played an significant role in the settlement progress and has enabled a working relationship between tangata whenua and the crown in addressing historical Treaty claims," Ms Beyer said.
Labour established the Waitangi Tribunal under Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 and later extended its jurisdiction to ensure it could address grievances back to 1840. The Waitangi Tribunal was established as a permanent commission of inquiry under the Treaty of Waitangi Act in 1975.
Ms Beyer also paid tribute to the late Hon Matiu Rata, who was responsible for introducing the Treaty of Waitangi Bill in November 1974.
"He said its purpose was to provide for the observation and confirmation of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and to determine claims about certain matters which are inconsistent with those principles. Today the Tribunal continues to work to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi which include good faith and restoration of relationship."
In celebrating 25 years, the Waitangi Tribunal has launched a new logo, and new website.
"The renewed website is very informative and user friendly. It is a vaulable resource which will help improve the understanding of the Tribunal and Settlement Process," Ms Beyer said.
