Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer welcomed the release of capacity building information packs out to the Māori community.
"This will help communities understand what capacity building is, what assistance is available and how to access resources and funding available," Ms Beyer said.
Capacity building information packs are available through Te Puni Kōkiri regional offices. A toll free number is also operating to provide information and assistance.
"Capacity building is one of the key initiatives of the Government's Māori Development strategy. It aims to empower whanau, hapu, iwi, Māori organisations and Māori communities to control their own development and achieve their own objectives.
"The previous government's mainstreaming programmes clearly failed Māori, I believe that it is time to recognise and support whanau, hapu, iwi and Māori organisations to find their own solutions. Direct resourcing of Māori programmes across sectors will assist in achieving that goal" Ms Beyer said.
Regional offices of Te Puni Kōkiri will provide on-going strategic support and encouragement to Māori groups throughout the process. Groups can apply for funding
to assist with capacity assessment
to develop, implement and evaluate plans
to contract specialist advisors e.g. legal and financial advisors and key workers
assistance to access resources and funding from other agencies.
