MP unable to attend meeting
9 December 2003

Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer said today she was regrettably unable to attend Monday night's public meeting in Masterton, called to discuss issues affecting foster children in Wairarapa.

"I had an unscheduled meeting with the Minister of Māori Affairs, Hon Parekura Horomia, and the chair of the Māori Caucus, under secretary Mita Rurunui, last night regarding the Foreshores and Seabeds, which is another pressing issue for Wairarapa constituents given the region's very large coastline," Ms Beyer said.

"Unfortunately this meant that I was unable to attend last night's public meeting in Masterton."

Ms Beyer said, while she understands she will come in for some criticism for not attending, she was confident that officials from CYF and the Ministry who were present would listen to concerns raised and would be able to offer some response.

"Over the past few weeks I have been in contact with the office of the Minister of CYF, Hon Ruth Dyson, and had already had a thorough briefing from officials before the meeting," Ms Beyer said.

"I am confident that what the Ministry has offered will go some way towards addressing the very valid concerns raised."
