Resignation as Mayor of Carterton
8 March 2000

Georgina Beyer today announced her resignation as the Mayor of Carterton.

"It has not been an easy decision but I feel it is the correct one. I didn't want to let things get to a point where there has been any sense of a dereliction of duty."

Ms Beyer said since becoming Wairarapa's MP, the number of Wairarapa people coming forward for help has taken her by surprise and when this is coupled with parliamentary duties, the workload is significant.

Ms Beyer said the decision whether or not to resign came down to being able to represent the people of Carterton and representing all Wairarapa people.

"I thought long and hard and took advice from many people. I came to the decision that I can best serve the needs of Wairarapa as the people's voice in Parliament."

Although stepping aside as Carterton's Mayor, Ms Beyer will continue to live in the town and plans to take an active interest in its future.

"Carterton has been my home for 10 years and I certainly have a deep affection for it."

Ms Beyer said she realises her announcement will play into the hands of her critics and while it takes courage to admit when you are wrong, common sense must prevail.

"I have been honoured to be of service to Carterton district and I am sincerely grateful for the support I have received during my tenure as Mayor. I hope this will carry through into my service as their Member of Parliament," she said.

"At the end of the day it is better to do one job well than two jobs poorly."
