Wairarapa MP, Georgina Beyer, says it was an exciting time for the sport and recreation sector.
"Over the last few weeks there have been three significant announcements that show huge leaps forward for the sector," Ms Beyer said.
"Legislation has been introduced to Parliament to establish a new agency to take over key functions of the Hillary Commission, the Sports Foundation, and the Office of Tourism and Sport. The Recreation and Sport Agency Bill will shortly go before a select committee for public submissions.
"The Budget contained a huge funding commitment to the sector. Nearly $100 million over the next five years will go towards implementing the recommendations of the major review into Sport, Fitness and Leisure. The new agency will have a key role in determining the priorities in this area.
"Today, the Minister for Sport, Fitness and Leisure Trevor Mallard has announced the membership of the board to steer the agency.
"Board members come from a wide range of recreation, sport, business, and governance backgrounds. Collectively they bring the strength of skills required to take New Zealand toward a healthier, more physically active and successful sporting nation.
"The Government recognises the contribution that a flourishing recreation and sport sector can make to the well being of the country.
"There are social behaviour benefits, there are savings to be made on health costs through a more healthy society, and there is the immense national pride that results from top rating performances from our elite athletes.
"Last year, the Government ran a major review to develop a long term vision and strategy for the sector. There are no short term solutions. But in the last few weeks, the Government has shown the country we are committed to making a difference in this area.
"As a result, we will all reap the benefits," Ms Beyer said.
