High speed Internet for remote Wairarapa communities
6 August 2004

High speed Internet for isolated parts of Wairarapa is a step closer with a preferred supplier chosen for the Project PROBE satellite option for schools in Wairarapa.

Project PROBE - the PROvincial Broadband Extension - is a multi-million dollar government investment to boost education and economic development through the delivery of broadband technology to regional New Zealand.

Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer says that under the soon-to-be-signed contract a total of over 170 students at Akitio School at Pongaroa near Dannevirke, Mangamaire School at Pahiatua, and Wainuioru School near Masterton will get the satellite service, supplied by ICONZ.

The local schools are amongst some 60 remote New Zealand schools and their communities to receive the service across the country.

Ms Beyer says Project PROBE is an important part of the Labour-Progressive government's strategy to grow a more innovative economy.

"Project PROBE is a critical infrastructure investment. It'll supply broadband Internet not just to schools, but also to local people in the surrounding communities.

"It means students and families, businesspeople and workers will have the same opportunities in education and in economic development, regardless of where they live and work," said Ms Beyer.

"This is a real plus for remote schools. Now they'll have access to digital resources, discussion forums and online classrooms that can link teachers and students across the country. Students and teachers will have more choice about what can be studied and taught, and they'll have better e-learning opportunities.

"Broadband Internet breaks down the digital divide between metropolitan and rural communities and this is an important part of our strategy to produce a more innovative and successful economy for every community."
