Connecting with small business
3 February 2004

Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer will be visiting Wairarapa business Vetcare as part of the Government's programme of connecting with small businesses around the country.

The visit will be just one of more than 30 visits by MPs and ministers to small businesses to discuss with businesspeople the issues they face and how the Government can best address them. The media is invited to join Ms Beyer on a tour of the business.

"While the small business sector has shown outstanding growth over the last year, we want to show that we are committed to continuing to meet the needs of small businesses," Ms Beyer says.

"Small businesses - those who employ 20 or fewer staff - account for 97 per cent of New Zealand businesses, and the continuing success of our economy depends on the success of small business."

Vetcare is a great example of a successful small business, initially opening in Masterton in 1999 and establishing clinics in Carterton, Greytown and Riversdale since. It won "best entrepreneur" category in the Ernst-Young business awards.

The Government will also host 24 Small Businesses Days around the country, from February 13, which will celebrate small business success and strengthen communication between the Government and small business. Wairarapa Small Business Day will be held on April 29 at Copthorne Solway Park.
