Wairarapa MP, Georgina Beyer, is pleased to announce that Kuranui College head boy Finlay Bird has been selected to represent the Wairarapa Electorate at the upcoming Youth Parliament 2000.
Ms Beyer invited schools within the electorate to select a student between the ages of 16 and 18 (ie not eligible to vote for the first time until at least 2002) to be part of Youth Parliament 2000.
Students were asked to write an essay of no more than 400 words describing why he or she wants to be an MP and what policies they would bring to Parliament.
They were asked to include what issues they feel strongly about, their plans on how they will represent young people in Parliament and what they see as being the key issues for young New Zealanders, such as whether the voting age should be lowered.
Finlay said in his essay that this is one of the issues he feels strongly about and Ms Beyer said she is looking forward to seeing him debate it during the sitting of the Youth Parliament.
Youth Parliament 2000, which is to be held on Monday August 28 and Tuesday August 29, is a big event and involves 120 Youth Members of Parliament and a Youth Press Gallery.
Youth MPs will be sitting on select committees, asking questions of Ministers, debating in the House and answering questions put to them by the Youth Parliamentary Press Gallery.
"It presents a wonderful opportunity for the future lawmakers of our country to have first-hand experience of the parliamentary process and I am pleased Wairarapa will have a representative in this," Ms Beyer said.
