Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer today welcomed the news that Wairarapa schools have been successful in gaining funding grants from the Government's Financial Assistance Scheme.
Ms Beyer said 22 schools in Wairarapa had been given grants totalling $273,776. Added to school contributions totalling $181,188 this meant a total of $454,964 spent on school improvement projects in the electorate.
"There are some really exciting developments planned like an adventure playground at Hillcrest School, construction of a library and information suite at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Wairarapa and an long-awaited administration area upgrade at Akitio and Opaki schools," Ms Beyer said.
"I know schools in Wairarapa will be really improved by this project. I am particularly pleased that so many will be using the funding for projects that will enhance the schools use of information and communication technology."
The Financial Assistance Scheme supports projects that are partly funded by the schools and their communities themselves. This year the Government allocated $22 million to the assistance scheme with schools contributing $17 million to the improvements.
Education Minister Trevor Mallard has announced that 880 school property improvement projects in 719 schools, ranging from upgraded classrooms to an auditorium, have been approved under the scheme.
He said the Financial Assistance Scheme is a feature of the Government's $403 million dollar works programme for schools for 2000/2001, which also pays for classrooms to meet roll growth, new schools and general modernisation of existing schools, all at full cost to the state.
